There were some amazing views of the valley and Inferno Crater was amazing.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is famous since it was the site of some amazing white and pink terraces (like the ones in Turkey), which were once known as the eighth wonder of the world. They were totally destroyed in the fallout from the violent eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886 and are buried beneath approximately 40m of water.

After the walk, we took a boat cruise across the lake.

Rotorua Lakes

sunny 21 °C

19 Dec 2012
Today was a nice relaxing drive up to the Rotorua Lakes to do some waking. The weather was largely fine, with the occasional drizzle, but the lakes were very pretty. We walked along Blue lake and then went to ?? lake and walked around it.

After that we headed to the Redwoods park and had a walk amongst the redwoods and ferns. Gorgeous and tranquil, but very steamy.

19 Dec 2012 Rotorua

overcast 18 °C

Today was much quieter. We spent most of the day at the Rotorua Museum. The building was originally the Rotorua Baths, a place for people to go and "Take the cure", by soaking in the hot mineral waters of Rotorua.
The tour of the hospital building was very interesting - especially the basement with the access areas to maintain the pipes and the roof, with the roof top view.
A quick dinner tonight, then we headed to the cinema. We were going to see the Hobbitt, but it was sold out, so we saw Skyfall. It was pretty good, somewhat in the older Bond tradition.

Hobbiton

Film Set

semi-overcast 17 °C

17 Dec 2012
We left Hamilton and drove on to Cambridge. While we were there, we had a look at the tourist info and decided to head over to the Hobbiton set, which was sort of on the way to Rotorua.
The tour was quite expensive ($NZ 75) but the site has changed dramatically. The set has been left and is being maintained as a tourist feature. They've also re-built the Green Dragon tavern and outfitted it as it was shown in the film. it was quite a better tour than the one we did a few years ago.

Hamilton - New Zealand

21 °C

16 Dec 2012
Our taxi picked us up at 4.00 am, because we had a 6.00 am flight. The first leg was Melbourne to Sydney. Then we had a 2 hour transfer wait, until we could catch a QANTAS share flight (with LAN airlines) to Auckland. The LAN flight was delayed arriving into Sydney and was delayed out of Sydney. We boarded and sat in a nice hot plane for close on an hour before we started taxing.

The flight was OK, breakfast was poor. We finally arrived in Auckland and got through customs it was about 3.45pm local time.
We picked up the hire car and headed to our first stop - Hamilton.
BY the time we arrived we were exhausted. It wasn't just the long day, but we'd been to a wedding in Mornington on Saturday, and by the time we got home etc it was after midnight

We didn't do much in Hamilton except have dinner & a quick drive along the main road, where we saw this giant Christmas tree and lit fountain.

Historic Richmond

sunny 12 °C

Today we headed towards Richmond. The first stop was the Mt Pleasant Radio Telescope. Unfortunately the museum was closed, but we did have a walk around the site - there were some amazing views of the radio telescopes and the surrounding area.

Aftertre that we stopped by three wineries - Meadowbank, PuddleDuck and Pooley, as well as the Wicked cheese company.
Tasmania produces some great wines - but they're very expensive.
We finally stopped in Richmond for a picnic lunch and had a look around the town.

After we'd wandered around Richmond and the gaol, we headed over to the other side of Hobart to visit the old shot tower. I went for a walk up the tower and took some great photos down the inside of the tower.

After that it was back to town to droip the hire car off. Sarah headed up to the choir registration (Festival of Voices). I went to the voice of ideas where I saw Jeff Kennett (ex Premier of Victoria) and Paul Lennon (ex Premier of Tasmania) discussing Tasmania's future. I have to say Jeff Kennett was very well spoken and really had the audience in the palm of his hand.
